GreenFiber Radiant Barrier Installation Nationwide

GreenFiber Radiant Barrier Installation: The Long Beach Owner’s Guide

We stock and install GreenFiber-compatible radiant barrier in Long Beach homes, with most installations running $1.40 to $2.80 per square foot installed, depending on attic access and existing insulation condition. Most owners discover their radiant barrier has failed during a heat wave, when the upstairs rooms suddenly feel 10 degrees warmer than before, or when an AC bill in July or August spikes well past what the same month cost last year. You’ll want this addressed before another Long Beach summer settles in, and we carry the materials on our trucks for same-week scheduling.

Radiant barrier is not the same thing as insulation. GreenFiber’s perforated radiant barrier sheeting reflects radiant heat away from your living space, while their blown-in cellulose insulation slows conductive heat. When the barrier tears, sags, or loses its foil facing, your attic stops deflecting that Long Beach sun and your insulation has to work harder, which it was never sized to do alone. The fix is not complicated, but it has to be done right: stapled taut, with the right air gap, and without compressing the insulation below it.

Which GreenFiber Models This Applies To

GreenFiber radiant barrier typically comes in two forms: a single-sided foil product and a double-sided foil product, both sold in rolls 48 inches wide. The double-sided version is what we recommend for most Long Beach attics because it performs whether it is installed against the rafters or laid over existing insulation on the attic floor. If your barrier has foil on only one side, that side must face an air space of at least 3/4 inch, always. That is the single most common installation error we correct in older Long Beach homes, from the craftsman bungalows in Rose Park to the newer builds near El Dorado Park.

The GreenFiber product is not a structural component, so there is no OEM-only argument the way there is with, say, a furnace control board. The material itself is what matters: foil facing, perforation for moisture vapor to pass, and a substrate that does not tear when stapled. We install genuine GreenFiber radiant barrier because we are a GreenFiber dealer, but we also carry Reflectix for owners who prefer that brand. Thistledown Insulation Long Beach is an independent installer, not affiliated with GreenFiber, so we can match the material honestly to your attic rather than push one brand.

Signs Your GreenFiber Radiant Barrier Installation Is Failing

  • Upstairs rooms are noticeably hotter than downstairs. The barrier has sagged away from the rafters or torn along a staple line, and the attic is now radiating heat directly into the ceiling joists.
  • You can see shiny material hanging down when you peek into the attic. Staples have pulled out, usually because they were spaced too far apart or driven into drywall dust instead of solid rafter wood.
  • Dust or grit on top of the barrier foil. Over years in a Long Beach attic, dust settling on the foil facing cuts its reflective performance by up to half. Perforated barrier resists this better than solid foil, but it still needs occasional inspection.
  • Your energy bill in August is much higher than last August. The AC is running longer because the attic is no longer stopping radiant heat before it reaches the insulation.
  • Rust spots, water stains, or mold staining on the barrier. Moisture got trapped where it should not be. In Long Beach’s coastal humidity, this often means the barrier was installed without the perforation facing the right direction, or bathroom vents are dumping into the attic.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Long Beach, a radiant barrier replacement or new installation typically falls between $800 and $2,400 for a standard attic of 500 to 1,200 square feet. The range exists because attics differ dramatically from house to house: some have wide-open rafter bays, others have ductwork, wiring, and recessed lights woven through every bay, which adds labor hours. Your exact number is written down before we start, and it is the number you pay. That is a Thistledown rule, not a courtesy.

The price includes the GreenFiber radiant barrier material, all staples and fasteners, removal and disposal of the old failed barrier if present, and a full post-installation cleanup with photos so you can see the result without climbing the ladder. Our work carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if something is not right within a year, we come back and make it right, no debate. Neil Barron, our owner, sits down with every Long Beach customer before a single staple goes in to walk through what product goes where and what the line-item cost covers.

DIY or Call Us?

A homeowner can absolutely diagnose a failed radiant barrier. You do not need tools to look into your attic with a flashlight and check for sagging, tearing, rust staining, or fallen sections. What you should not do is pull it down and restaple it yourself, at least not without knowing what is above and below your head. In many Long Beach attics, especially the older bungalows, we find knob-and-tube wiring or junction boxes from decades of additions hiding above the insulation. One wrong staple placement near live wiring turns a $1,200 job into an emergency.

Working in an attic also means heat. In July, a Long Beach attic can sit at 130 degrees or worse, and heat exhaustion comes on fast when you are kneeling on joists and reaching overhead. We do this with knee boards, respirators as needed, and a partner on the ground. If you would rather not spend a Saturday afternoon sweating in a fiberglass-filled attic, call (562) 471-3972 and we will handle the whole thing.
